CLASS

Description: Students in English 9 / Introduction to Humanities will learn, practice, and continually improve reading, writing, speaking, and critical thinking skills essential for college preparation.  Specific learning targets will be guided by the Grade 9 Indiana Academic Standards for English / Language Arts (available online at http://www.doe.state.in.us/standards/).

In accordance with the classical, liberal arts, college preparatory focus of Herron High School, literary selections for English 9 / Introduction to Humanities will be aligned with the art history timeline, focusing on texts and themes from ancient world cultures (i.e. Mesopotamia, Egypt, China, Japan, Sub-Saharan Africa, and Mesoamerica).  In the next eight months, we will read literature ranging from one of the oldest known narratives, The Epic of Gilgamesh, to a Shakespearean play, to a novel, Things Fall Apart, that has already achieved â??modern classicâ?? status.  We will study the origin of the English language through a rich Latin and Greek vocabulary curriculum, we will hone our writing skills through daily practice and intriguing assignments, and we will look for connections between our content and all of your other classes.
