CLASS

Description: This course will challenge you to become a more independent painter and learner.  An emphasis will be placed on the development of your understanding and implementation of the Elements and Principles of Art.  While at the same time, this course will require you to experiment both technically and conceptually.  A continued emphasis will be placed on the study of the Art History Timeline.  You will be asked to reference artists or artistic movements that interest you.

This semester will require you to work more like real artists.  You will be responsible for working with ideas and creating art that interests you.  Creative independence may not come easily, but we will work on the development of your creative and conceptual thinking as well as the technical skills that will help you to express yourself.

Current Project:  What is Beauty?

Project Objectives:

1.      Create a list of at least 20 objects that could be considered “junk”.

2.      Find, select, and bring in three small hand-held objects that would generally be considered as “junk” in our culture.  No dog waste, rotten food, or infectious waste.  There is a difference between “junk” and garbage.  If you have trouble discerning between the two, please ask me to clarify before you begin your search.

3.      Create preparatory sketches of the object in a dry medium.  This will help you to resolve any technical issues that might otherwise prevent you from creating a realistic depiction of the object.  In other words, you need to know how to draw it before you can paint it.

4.      Create 3 paintings of the same object with the attempt to make them as “beautiful” as possible. The first must be done using a monochromatic palette.  The second must be done using an approved color scheme (analogous, complementary, warm vs. cool, etc).  The final painting must be done using a full color palette.  At this point, you may choose to exaggerate the colors found in the object.

5.      You may choose to use the same composition or alter compositions as the paintings progress.

6.      All paintings must be done on the same size surface (9x12” min.) to help create a consistent comparison.

7.      All paintings must include the same object.  Please be careful when selecting an object.  It must hold your interest for at least three or four weeks while we paint it.  If you choose not to select and bring in an object one will be provided for you.  At this point, you will have no choice over which object to paint.  I am too busy to spend my days scouring the planet looking for something you may want to paint.  Bring something in – or take what you get.
